Blog Social networking

These days social networking is an integral part of our lives. From the days of only being seen as a way for teenagers and young adults to communicate and interact with each other, social media sites such as facebook, instagram, twitter and many more are being used by people of all ages to communicate with one another on a great number of smart devices across the world. As such with many people on these social media sites 24/7, corporations and businesses needed to adapt to there business plan to not only attract employees and customers on the physical level but also on the internet level with e-businesses becoming more prevalent everyday.
In the article "How to Build a Community on Social Media" by Sara Lavenduski, Dave Klonke, President and CEO of a merchandise agency, uses social networking in order to promote his business to much success. Klonke explains that since his company uses a lot of promo products, the visual nature fits perfectly on instagram where he is able to promote his products through picture posts that can be sent and spread out organically by friends, family and customers. This trend is not only exclusive to this business as any big company knows that social networking is an integral part for having a successful modern day franchise. Nowadays you see many businesses have there own facebook page, instragram account and twitter to promote its services and products to the many people around the world who check these social media sites daily and is influenced into either promoting there products to there own acquaintances which serves as free advertising for the company.

However with the prevalent use of social networking everyday one has to be worried about one's privacy and data they are giving out as well as whether to trust these sites that hold this personal information. Facebook, which has millions of users, have shown problems these past few years of there use of there user's data being accused of leaking and selling there data to other corporations and companies. As such Facebook has made steps in order to improve privacy and security among there users as an article by Marc Perry claims that, "“engagement with privacy settings increased significantly between 2009 and 2010", for students between the ages of 18-19 showing that users still hold there privacy to importance.

The use of social networking will continue to develop as e-businesses continue to become more stronger by the day with physical stores and locations slowly heading towards obsolete in comparison. It towards the future that the users will become more sensitive with there privacy and data as we have to be sure that this integral part of our lives can be trusted as well as not being abused by any forms of big power whether it may from hackers, big corporations or even the government itself.

A type of media that I feel will become extremely popular over the next few years is virtual product placement. As such this concept does exist with some products online offering full 3D views for users to see from all angles they wish to see. In addition, Virtual Reality playgrounds which allow users to place 3D models next to real life people and objects is also becoming more popular as things such as placing a virtual TV in your room to see what it would look like or placing a 3D model of an animal to compare size can all be done with smartphones. However I feel we will see this concept being taken further with advancement in 3D and graphic modeling software as well as hologram hardware where full objects can be displayed in full fidelity and high quality image quality. Fashion brands will be keen on this as 2D images can now be seen in 3D for a better look at a dress or bag as well as virtual models wearing the clothing being advertised so manufacturers don't even need to crea...

Blogs vs. Wiki

In this internet age we are living in, data and information is easily accessible to the masses. Books and magazines are slowly becoming less popular as online ebooks and news articles are becoming increasingly popular both in the appeal of being able to access on any smart device around the world as well as its easiness in storage compared to its real life counterparts. Along with this transition, Blogs and Wikis have become popular forms of information outlets that anyone in the world can access as long as they have access to a computer and an internet access. Although both of these information outlets serve the same primary function of spreading information to the masses, there tone and purpose both differ in what they are providing and what they are accomplishing. UNSW Sydney describes a blog as an, "An online journal (web log), diary or news column with posts in reverse-chronological order and options for readers to comment." As such these blog posts are more concern...

A part of Baruch that I could feel could improve with the use of new media is the news of Baruch and the spread of general events and programs happening on the campus. As it stands there is already a weekly newsletter and a number of social accounts on twitter and Instagram that touch upon this but I feel every one of them could do a better way to convey this information. Rather then improving on this, other ways Baruch could expand on this information is applying some new forms of media. While there is a newspaper I feel that it could implemented online as well detailing the information of Baruch in its status and events and could perhaps be the replacement/addition to the weekly newsletter. Other ways of news getting spread to student in Baruch is perhaps applying a internet news program whether it be live or through a podcast. This gives a more live look on how the college is as well as gives experience and a learning opportunity to students who wish to partake in this.
