With fast download and upload speeds available to everyone these days, file sharing has become a pinnacle part of modern society. File sharing, the act of sharing and transmitting of computer data through a network or internet, can be used in so many ways such as sharing and sending photos to friends and families or uploading a video on YouTube for thousands to see. In addition to its use and accessibility, file sharing allows the access and transmitting of data from one computer to another regardless of their location, making it efficient for the users to work on documents.
A specific type of file sharing Peer-to-Peer, or otherwise known as P2P, allows individuals to access media files using software program that searches and locates computers that have the file that is wanted (Margomin). Unlike other uses of file sharing, P2P hosts a whole assortment of files to share from movies, books and music all available for all users to access and download.
An example of P2P technology is through the use of torrents where users share torrent files that allow other users to slowly download pieces of a media file until it is fully complete. A popular tool that allows the download of torrent files is Bitorrent which manages the files being downloaded as well as the speed it is being downloaded and uploaded. A major issues with torrents is the movies, books and music that are being uploaded and downloaded are often copyrighted and the methods of getting these files is illegal. However despite the legality of these issues, people have swapped illegal copies of songs, television shows and movies on the Internet for years (Stelter and Stone).
