In this new media age where information is uploaded and transferred every second, users have been becoming more wary of what personal information there posting as well as the consequences that could come along with it. Although posting personal photos and videos may be intended for friends and family, there may be a chance that people unintended could see these photos and videos as well being used against you in the future. A case you can see this is in the article, "Attack Ad Marks New Era For Millennial Running For Office" where Jon Ossof, a candidate in the special election in Georgia, has college photos and videos of him being used and spun in a way to put him in a negative spotlight as a spoiled frat boy, which is unappealing for the voters.
With other cases like this being more relevant in the upcoming times of the internet you have to wonder how well your privacy is being dealt with and whether it is truly safe for you to post it. Media sites such as Facebook have shown in the past of users data has being leaked for anyone to use. Other vital information such as credit card information is also in danger of being stolen by hackers as shown earlier this year with Target where 110 million customers were affected by this breach .
As such privacy is an important topic for all forms of new media. It is important for all users to know where there data is going and how the company responsible for your data is showing ways to secure it as well to ensure you that your information you put online won't be a hindrance/ negative effect on your day to day life.
Hi Neil,
ReplyDeleteI think that despite this issue of privacy, all forms of new media are still used on a daily basis by millions of people. Do you think that this may be due to the fact that using such platforms is convenient? For example online shopping. Despite reading news of hacking and stolen information, people still do online shopping and use their credit cards all over the internet. Perhaps at the end of the day, it is the convenience that outweighs the potential risks of new media.
I think that to fix this issue, we need to scale back and think about potential invasions of privacy when we are trying to advance technology. Although technology can be more convenient for us, it can also put us on positions we do not wish to be in.
